The Jean Maxon Carpenter Memorial Scholarship

The South County Chamber Singers (SCCS), in honor of Jean Maxon Carpenter, will award a $1,000 scholarship to a high school senior who plans to continue vocal studies in college. Jean was well known throughout New York and Rhode Island for her contributions to the musical arts as a musician and music educator. She was an instructor of both piano and voice, collaborative pianist, accomplished composer, music director, and a beloved member of the South County music community. The South County Chamber Singers are privileged to have had Jean serve as its Artistic Director from 2016 through 2021. 

This scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000, paid directly to the student.  The award recipient will be invited to perform a solo at the April 19, 2026  SCCS performance.

All students who submit a completed application will receive a complimentary ticket to attend one of the South County Chamber Singers spring performances on April 17 or 19. 

Eligibility:


  • The student is a high school senior who is actively studying voice, with a focus in either classical or musical theater performance.
  • The student is planning to major or minor in any field of music, including but not limited to music performance, music education or music therapy.
  • The student is a permanent resident of: Charlestown, Hopkinton, Exeter, Jamestown, Narragansett, North Kingstown, South Kingstown, Richmond, or Westerly.

A complete application will include: 
  • Completed Google Form.
  • ​An official high school transcript (upload to Google form)
  • An unedited, informal video recording of a recent vocal performance, 3-5 minutes, may consist of either a recent performance or a college prescreen audition. Accepted file formats are .mp4 or .mov.  (upload to Google form) 
  • One page essay, approximately 500 words. Explain why you want to study music and what your career goal is (upload to Google form)
  • Two letters of recommendation- one must be from a music teacher or music director. Please note, these letters do not need to be written specifically for this scholarship. Recommendations written for college admission, music program admission, or another merit-based program are acceptable (meaning these letters do not need to be addressed specifically to the SCCS). Please have those writing your recommendations email the letter directly to [email protected] by March 6. DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH 13.

The deadline for submission of your application is March 6, 2026. DEADLINE EXTENDED THROUGH MARCH 13.

The selection committee will review applications and notify the award recipient via email by March 31.

​The selected recipient will be invited to be acknowledged publicly during the SCCS Spring Concert on April 19 and will be invited to perform a solo during that concert. (Details of performance to be coordinated by awardee and the SCCS Artistic Director.)
